#8: Required Cold-Weather Recess in Sub-Zero Weather (Finland & Russia)
In America, a heavy snowstorm or freezing temperatures means indoor recess, if not a canceled school day. But in Finland and Russia, it’s just another day on the playground. Students there are required by law to have their recess outdoors in weather as cold as 5°F. It doesn’t matter if it’s snowing or windy, they bundle up and head outside. The belief is that this exposure to the cold builds mental toughness and a stronger immune system.
