#17: Compulsory Group Stretches and Radio Calisthenics (Japan & China)
Before the first lesson of the day begins in many Japanese and Chinese schools, the entire student body gathers outside. Then, music starts playing over a loudspeaker (normally a simple piano tune from a historic broadcast). Everyone performs a synchronized calisthenics routine known as “Radio Taiso.” The gentle exercises are meant to wake up the body and mind, promote circulation, and foster unity. It’s a morning ritual that has been a part of school life for generations.
