In 1939, Chariton, Iowa, witnessed a charming moment as little Mary Atha, pictured, was chosen by a Folger salesman to complement his coffee display. A nostalgic snap, it showcases coffee priced at a mere $0.57 for two pounds.

Back in the day, Mary Atha’s parents, like many, maintained a credit tab at their local grocery in Chariton, Iowa. A common practice was allowing for grocery shopping on credit, a concept somewhat alien in today’s transactional landscape.
