Pierre Loti was a naval officer, novelist, traveler, costume enthusiast, and walking exotic fantasy in a century that adored theatrical men with passports. He cultivated a flamboyant persona, complete with tattoos, uniforms, foreign settings, and intense romantic melancholy. Subtle he was not. Loti turned life into performance, travel into seduction, and self-presentation into an art form. If Instagram had existed, he would have been unbearable. Also extremely followed.
