Patrick Bateman is a hollow monster of vanity, violence, status anxiety, and perfectly described business cards. He is not sympathetic in any normal sense. But he is understandable as satire: the logical endpoint of a culture obsessed with surfaces, brands, bodies, restaurants, suits, and competitive emptiness.
