Some fictional characters are not misunderstood saints. They are cruel, selfish, violent, manipulative, abusive, or just plain exhausting. And yet, the best writing gives even the worst people a pressure system. You may not excuse what they do, but you can see the wound, the fear, the ideology, or the broken world that shaped them. These are the characters who make us uncomfortable because their logic is not nonsense. It is simply terrifying when followed all the way down.
