The journalist
The journalist that Alvarenga turned to tell his story is Jonathan Franklin. Franklin regularly reports for the UK newspaper The Guardian as well as VICE and Esquire. He wrote the account of the Chilean miners trapped a kilometer underground in 2010, so he has a penchant for stories of survival against the odds.
Franklin managed to earn Alvarenga’s trust and spent time with him going over his traumatic experience. Together, the two of them were able to put it all into words and produce a wonderful book, which is well worth a read. You can find out more about what it was like out in the middle of the Pacific.
