Fear of the dark
Alvarenga has been left with many things to deal with after 14 months at sea, most of it alone. This is unsurprising, as even the strongest characters would find it tough to go through such an ordeal without developing some scars.
He is now scared of the ocean, which is unsurprising. He always sleeps with the lights on, being scared of the dark, and he needs to have someone with him at all times, terrified as he is of being alone again. His life will never be ordinary again.
