Keeping the faith
The second thing that kept Alvarenga from giving up all hope and throwing himself into the sea was his faith. There were times when he considered giving up and ending his own life, joining Cordoba in the sea, but he hung on because of his religion.
Committing suicide was not only against his Catholic faith, but he believed what his mother had told him, that those who killed themselves didn’t go to heaven. He focused on trying to think of solutions to his predicament and keep a lookout for ships on the horizon. Now, alone, his mental state was even more at risk.
