Trauma and isolation affect people in very different ways, and it had become apparent that Alvarenga and Cordoba were dealing with their situation very differently. After 2 months in the same routine, Alvarenga was used to their new diet of fish, birds, and turtles. Cordoba, however, had reacted badly to raw bird meat and been sick.

He made the decision not to eat anything, and it was rapidly affecting his physical and mental health. One morning, he woke saying “I am dying, I am dying.” Alvarenga tried to get him to drink some water, but Cordoba’s body started to convulse and he died.
