Catching fish
As they had tossed the fishing equipment overboard to stay afloat, Alvarenga had to find another way of finding food. Amazingly, he invented a daring way to catch them with his hands, sitting on the side of the boat, with his hands still in the water before smashing them together as a fish swam through.
Alvarenga would catch the fish and Cordoba would gut and slice them up, leaving the strips to dry in the sun. Occasionally they were even able to catch turtles, and sometimes flying fish would land inside their boat, making for a slight variation in their diet.
