In the meantime, however, Alvarenga and Cordoba were still out at sea, and they began to realize that they weren’t going to be rescued. They had no way of contacting the shore, as the mobile phone and GPS were broken and the radio was out of battery. They could only concentrate on matters closer to hand.

The first problem was ensuring that the boat, their lifeline, stayed intact during the storms that kept buffeting them. With considerable knowledge of boats and the ocean, Alvarenga put his experience to use, guiding Cordoba through learning these new skills.
