African Hammer Tool
This carved hammer, while sturdy in appearance, doesn’t seem overly large. The size of the head would certainly make it difficult to hammer small nails or pegs. However, as it turns out, it’s not meant for the garage and it doesn’t have the purpose you might think. You’ll actually be more likely to find it tucked into an apron than a toolbelt.

This hammer is actually referred to as a sugar hammer. In the 1940s, sugar was sold not in small little bags like today, but rather in large blocks. It was common in certain parts of Africa to use a decorated hammer like this one to break down the sugar blocks into more manageable pieces.
