Science and Music
What was your first thought when looking at this object? If you’re a music junky, and you were around in the time when people used cassettes, you may recognize this device. For the rest of us, this long-cabled, wheeled thing that kind of looks like a tuning fork, is pretty confusing. It also looks very different than today’s version of the same tool.
Apparently, when tapes (or compact cassette tapes) were initially introduced, they were sometimes magnetized. This machine demagnetizes the tapes. Why does this matter, you ask? It’s said to significantly reduce background noises such as hisses or clicks on the tape. That’s something you want to avoid when listening to music.
