This interesting object was found in the Netherlands. With clips on each end and several beads connected by a string, this hiker wasn’t sure what they had stumbled upon. Apparently, they were found near a military camp, which certainly makes sense considering their intended use. Thanks again to Reddit, now we all know what this random item is!
As it turns out, ranger beads, also known as pacer beads, are used to keep pace. Rangers and military personnel alike need to be able to keep track of the distance they’ve traveled and GPS isn’t always readily available. The two sets of beads each serve a function. One is for keeping track of distance, the other keeping track of pace.
