Apparently, it’s so frequent to introduce a brother or sister and then forget them that it’s been popularly labelled the “disappearing sibling” trope. Buffy’s sister, Dawn, was central throughout season 5 before being thrown under the bus for no reason, and she was quite a compelling character.
