In the ’80s, hair or glam metal ruled. Bands like Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Bon Jovi mixed the long-haired look of ’70s bands with that ’80s androgyny. How many kids heard snide remarks from their parents about the band members looking like women? Usually, this would be as if you were watching the band on MTV.

The Dire Straits song “Money for Nothing” is a perfect time capsule for this mindset. So many folks were calling these bands all sorts of names for their looks. But deep down, all of them wished they learned to play that guitar!
