#8: Kennecott, Alaska 

Once a successful copper mining town, Kennecott has the tallest wooden building in North America. However, the town as a whole packed up and left in a single day when the copper ran out in 1938. Instead of deteriorating, it froze in time because the cold saved many of the buildings, and the offices still have 1938 calendars on display.
