#2: Times Beach, Missouri
Times Beach, a suburb of St. Louis, is a reminder of environmental foolishness. In the early 1970s, the town hired a contractor to apply oil to its dusty roads, only to discover that the oil contained dioxin. By 1983, everyone had been evacuated by the EPA due to health problems brought on by this chemical. The cleanup was the most costly environmental disaster in American history.
