#11: Bodie, California
Bodie was famous in the 1870s for being a lawless gold mining town with nearly daily murders. By the 1940s it was entirely abandoned, and nowadays, it is regarded as a “ghost town” that is maintained in “arrested decay.” Many of the buildings still standing are covered in the dust that settled after the last occupants left. Legend has it that anyone who steals even a pebble will suffer weird misfortunes until it is returned.
