There are towns all over the country that were once thriving but have since vanished. Natural disasters caused some towns to disappear, while toxic waste or industrial decline caused others to collapse. These locations are now ghost towns and even unsettling reminders of the past. Let’s learn more about some famous towns that are still remembered even though they are no longer on the map.
#1: Centralia, Pennsylvania
Centralia was once a center of activity, built around the profitable coal mining industry. That was changed in 1962 when a landfill fire caused an underground coal seam to catch fire. Since then, the unrelenting fire beneath the town caused the ground to crack open, creating dangerous conditions. In 1992, the government officially revoked Centralia’s zip code and demolished buildings to eliminate the risk.
