#23: That’s Baloney
Someone else on the internet seems to have an issue with Sean. This person tweeted out that they could not understand how “pony” and “bologna” can rhyme, but “Sean” and “bean” can’t. A lot of other people seem to agree, because this tweet got over 7,000 likes. Who knew this was such a hot-button issue…
Funnily enough, this particular spelling of “Sean” isn’t English- it’s Irish! That’s why the “-ean” part is pronounced like “-awn” and doesn’t rhyme with the word “bean.” Different language, different pronunciation! It’s interesting to think that the other spellings of “Sean” probably arose because people wanted to spell the name out phonetically, and that’s why we have several different ways to spell the name in English.
