#20: Love to Read
Do you love to read? What have you read lately? You most likely saw those two sentences and automatically pronounced “read” differently in each sentence. If you are fluent in English, it can be second nature for a lot of people to decipher the difference between these two words that are spelled exactly the same but pronounced differently.
The past tense of “read” is spelled exactly the same, but pronounced as “red.” That makes this pair of words a heteronym. We’ve visited heteronyms earlier in this article, but as a refresher, it’s when two words are spelled the same, but have different meanings and pronunciations. If someone is learning English or practicing their reading skills, this sentence can be a good challenge to try out.
