#16: I’m on a Boat
The English language we have today is a product of a bunch of different influences from around the world. English is considered to be a Germanic language, along with German and Dutch. It does have influences from Latin and the Romance languages, too (think Italian and Spanish) which makes it unique.
English being a Germanic language is directly related to the way we spell “yacht.” This Twitter user pointed out that people who learn English are superheroes because they learn how to spell words that make absolutely no sense, but they don’t give up. While we agree, there is a reason “yacht” is spelled with a “cht” and it’s pretty interesting. The word derives from the Dutch word “jacht” and it’s pronounced in a similar way. The more you know!
