#14: Plural Confusion
Some people say that English is a fairly easy language to learn. There are rules that can be taught and memorized quickly, making it easy for someone to learn English as a second language. The tough part, though, is learning all the exceptions to those rules! This little rhyme someone wrote is a testament to how complicated plural forms can be.
This poem, adapted from an unknown author, makes several good points. Why isn’t “meeses” the plural of “moose”?! Why can’t “hice” be a real word plural version of “house”?! A plural form of a noun depends on how the word ends, so that’s why there are so many confusing plural forms in the English language. The Latin roots of some words are also another reason plural forms get confusing. Gotta love language!
