#11: How Do You Say…
This Twitter comment thread went on a wild tangent full of hilarious wordplay. It all started with someone saying that the two pronunciations of “minute” shouldn’t be spelled the same. Honestly, we kind of agree. Why make it more confusing than it needs to be? Typical of Tumblr, more users chimed in with their own ironic examples of homophones, and it was pretty funny.
Each person pointed out a different example of a homophone, or two words that are spelled the same but mean different things and are pronounced differently. Our personal favorite is “I object to that object.” The words are spelled the same, but our English-speaking minds automatically pronounce them differently and we know what they mean. It’s pretty amazing how many of these words are out there potentially confusing people. Thanks, English.
