The English language is deceptively simple. Picture it: you’re sitting in English class. The teacher presents some straightforward rules for spelling and grammar and then goes on to talk about all the exceptions to the rules. It seems like all these rules exist in order to be broken. How can two words that are spelled the same be pronounced completely differently? How can you tell when vowels make a long or short sound? It’s a bit overwhelming to think about, honestly. So, people did the only thing that makes sense and took to Twitter and Tumblr to share the wildest examples of the English language doing the absolute most.
#1: Say What?
A weird part of the English language is the fact that we can say the same word multiple times a row and it will still make perfect grammatical sense. These comments give two extreme examples of this, and any native English speaker would have to pause a second before getting it!
English can have what’s called “double words” because of the past perfect tense. The past perfect tense is used when talking about more than one thing that happened in the past. It can get super confusing, as seen in the comment above, because the earliest past occurrence always goes first. This poster used to have good faith, and it had had no effect on the outcome. Yeah… we’re confused too.
