Something that many people have in common is that, as much as we like to see our fellow people succeed, we relish the chance to see them fail even more, especially when those failures can provide the basis for a good amount of wild, raucous laughter. Aside from being genuinely hilarious, witnessing other people’s mistakes reminds us that all humans are fallible and makes our own failures seem less significant. Common wisdom tells us that when in doubt, it’s often best to go with our gut. Making difficult choices can help dismiss some of the endless possibilities that can paralyze us into indecision. Unfortunately, spelling is one area where this isn’t the case for many of us.
When it comes to spelling, a much more sober policy would be to check when in doubt. I can appreciate this person’s efforts to write out the name of their favorite cheese phonetically, but honestly, it’s not that hard to find out the right way—unless this is genuinely how you spell it in some obscure language.
