Broadway called again in 1980, this time with one of the most significant theater roles of his career. Curry originated the part of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed play, Amadeus. Playing the genius composer as a giggling, vulgar man-child was a huge dramatic departure from his past roles. His brilliant performance earned him his first Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. He ultimately lost the award to his co-star, Ian McKellen, who played Salieri. Still, the nomination reinforced him as a serious dramatic force.
