In the ’90s, the shopping mall was a fun place to go but also a bit frightening. If a parent lost us, we thought it would be nearly impossible for them to find us among the sea of people. Nowadays, the mall is creepy not because it’s so packed but because it’s so empty.

Also, “lost in the mall” is the name of an experiment where someone implants false memories on someone else, including being lost in the mall as a kid. The only thing scarier than a memory is realizing that the memory may not even be real.
