Don’t Lose Perspective
“I was employed at a cancer nonprofit and hired a woman who was familiar with our organization because her child had cancer. However, my boss wanted me to terminate her employment because she occasionally had to arrive late or leave early to take her child to chemotherapy sessions. I adamantly refused to do so, and my boss threatened to fire me if I didn’t comply. My response was firm; she could go ahead and fire me if that was her decision. Fortunately, our CEO intervened and opposed the idea.”

“This incident occurred about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, my boss from that time still holds her position at the organization. It’s worth noting that she had a history of making questionable decisions, such as advising against hiring individuals with “ethnic” names because she believed they wouldn’t fit in with our office culture. Her actions led to investigations by both HR and, I believe, the state authorities.”
