Elisabeth of Bosnia became Queen of Hungary and Croatia in 1365 through her marriage to King Louis I, and she later served as regent after he died in 1382 because their daughters were still young. She worked tirelessly to protect Queen Mary’s inheritance, but rival noble families had other plans. In July 1386, Elisabeth and Mary were captured while traveling through Croatia and held for months at Novigrad Castle. Early the following year, Elisabeth was put to death inside the fortress while her daughter was forced to witness the event. Mary survived, regained her throne, and ruled until 1395.
