Love has a habit of ignoring common sense, and history is full of women who learned that the hard way. Some stepped into royal courts, others into political storms, all because romance seemed worth the risk at the time. What followed was simple: scandals that shook power structures, reputations rewritten overnight, and in certain cases, consequences that ended in exile, imprisonment, or worse. These stories sit somewhere between devotion and disaster, where personal choice collides with crowns, alliances, and ambition. And while centuries have passed, the debate around them is still very much alive: was it love, strategy, or a bit of both? Keep reading as we rank the women who gambled everything for love and see who ultimately paid the highest price.

#1: Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 – May 19, 1536)

King Henry VIII spent years seeking permission to end his first marriage so he could wed Anne Boleyn in 1533, a decision that triggered the English Reformation and the creation of the Church of England. Their marriage produced the future Queen Elizabeth I, but it soon fell apart after Anne failed to give Henry the son he wanted. In May 1536, she stood trial on accusations of adultery, incest, and treason that many historians believe were politically driven. She was executed inside the Tower of London at about 35 years old by a skilled French swordsman brought in specifically for the occasion.
