Conceived as a sprawling, insanely expensive theatrical production, this tour featured elaborate cityscapes, moving crane platforms, and elaborate hydraulic props inspired by George Orwell’s 1984. The massive production costs and grueling schedule pushed Bowie to his physical limits, prompting him to scrap the heavy set mid-tour and transition directly into the soulful “Soul Tour,” which birthed his Thin White Duke persona.
