#9: Bees Abandon Foraging Midday
More than 400 volunteers placed small microphones near flowers at 16 locations along the path of the 2017 total eclipse. Researchers expected bee activity to diminish gradually as the light weakened. Instead, the buzzing stopped with striking abruptness during totality. Acoustic evidence showed that bees continued flying through the partial phases, although individual flights lasted longer in the dimmer conditions. Only when complete darkness arrived did their activity nearly cease.
