Smart animals that trick predators by playing dead

The Virginia opossum is perhaps the world’s most famous example of an animal that truly “plays dead.” When confronted with overwhelming danger, it enters an involuntary physiological state rather than consciously deciding to remain still. Its heart rate slows dramatically, its body becomes limp, its lips pull back to expose the teeth, and it often releases an unpleasant odor from specialized glands. This remarkable condition can persist for several hours before the animal gradually recovers. Predators frequently lose interest because the opossum appears lifeless and potentially unsafe to consume.
