#15: Mount Hekla (Iceland, 1104 CE)

Medieval Europe called it The Gateway to Hell. When Hekla erupted, monks recorded rivers of fire and skies that bled red. Its ash reached England and Germany, falling like judgment from the heavens. To Icelanders, it was both curse and creation — a destroyer that also renewed soil and life. Pilgrims feared it; poets worshiped it.
