#14: Umbrella Night Draws a Crowd to a Game That Couldn’t Be Played
There is a particular kind of irony only minor league baseball can produce. One team once had to turn fans away on Umbrella Night because the field was too wet to play, even though the weather at the gate was clear and pleasant by then. The problem came from rain earlier in the day and a tarp that had not protected the infield properly, leaving the playing surface unfit for a game. So there they were: fans arriving for a rain-themed giveaway, standing under blue skies, being told that baseball was canceled because of rain they could no longer see.
