#28: John Denver – Take Me Home, Country Roads
John Denver’s hit song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” from 1971 remains one of the biggest, most beloved hits from the 70s. You probably can’t find a person in the country who isn’t familiar with the lyrics of this song, serenading the beautiful landscapes of West Virginia.

Listening to the song, it sounds like John Denver was born in West Virginia and wants to go back “home.” However, Denver was born in New Mexico, and when the song was released, he hadn’t even visited the state. Bill and Taffy Danoff wrote the song because they thought it would fit his voice, and they hadn’t been to West Virginia either! They were inspired by postcards sent to them from a close friend who was a West Virginia local.
