Perfection is often the goal inside a recording studio, with musicians repeating takes and producers carefully refining every detail. Yet many of the most memorable moments in popular music were never planned at all. A singer entering a verse too early, a damaged amplifier creating a new sound, or an offhand remark left on the tape sometimes transformed a recording. In several cases, these unexpected accidents helped shape songs that would go on to become classics.
#1: The Beatles’ “I’m Only Sleeping”
During the 1966 recording sessions for I’m Only Sleeping, members of The Beatles experimented heavily with tape manipulation. Guitarist George Harrison recorded a lead guitar part that producer George Martin later reversed by flipping the tape. The strange, backwards solo wasn’t initially conceived as the centerpiece, but it ended up giving the dreamy track its unmistakably psychedelic atmosphere.
