#2: The Five Royales (1952)

The Five Royales blended gospel passion with R&B style, scoring several early hits. Guitarist Lowman Pauling’s inventive playing gave them a unique edge that guitarists still study. Though they ended in 1965, their songs lived on through covers by James Brown and others. Their Rock Hall induction finally honored their influence on soul and rock.
