Robert Redford had the looks, polish, and marketability that executives could understand, which explains why his name entered the conversation for Michael Corleone. On paper, that version of The Godfather (1972) might have seemed easier to sell. But Michael is not supposed to feel like the obvious movie-star center of the room. He has to begin at a slight emotional distance, almost like a guest at his own family’s tragedy, before becoming the man everyone fears.
