#17: Jane Fonda and the Nurse Ratched Road Not Taken
Power in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) does not shout at first. It smiles, organizes, corrects, and waits. That is why Nurse Ratched was such a difficult role to cast. Jane Fonda was among the actresses connected to the search, and her presence would have brought a different charge into the ward. That might have made the character feel more openly ideological. Louise Fletcher, less burdened by audience expectation, made a quieter choice. The performance became frightening because it felt institutional rather than theatrical.
