One of the SNL greats, Eddie Murphy, was responsible for creating several iconic characters on the show over the years. But there was one character he became “too” famous for, “Buckwheat,” and he wanted to kill off the character, so he did so literally in one sketch.

At seven minutes, one of the longer sketches in the show’s history mocks how Americans sensationalized national tragedies at the time. The scene of the crime was similar to that of John Lennon’s murder, turning the killer (also played by Murphy) into a celebrity of sorts while constantly being interrupted by sponsored life insurance advertisements.
