Jaleel White’s Steve Urkel proved to be such a hit that he overshadowed the original cast of Family Matters in 1989. Reginald VelJohnson, who played Urkel’s father, was not happy about this change in focus. Funny thing is, after Jaleel White’s first episode, he was almost fired because the other actors thought his character was annoying. Finally, Urkel evolved from a small role to the heart of the show.
