#1: The Sacred Geese That Saved Rome  

In 390 BCE, as the Gauls attempted a stealth climb up Rome’s Capitoline Hill, it was not soldiers but sacred geese that broke the silence. Their honking alerted Roman defenders just in time to repel the invasion. Dogs, ironically, had failed to notice the approach. The geese became honored symbols of vigilance and were thereafter protected and celebrated.
