The Amazon rainforest holds a lot of mysteries, some incredible and others quite scary. Known as the “lungs of the Earth,” this region is home to many species, many of which are not found anywhere else. Alongside its beauty, there are some terrifying realities that can sound a bit disturbing. Let’s learn about chilling truths about the Amazon rainforest.
#1: The Blood-Sucking Laser Precision of the Candiru
While many people fear apex predators like jaguars, locals in the Amazon talk about the candiru. It is a tiny, translucent catfish known for its aggressive nature. This little fish can sense urea and ammonia in the water, making it a potential threat to swimmers who urinate while in the river. Incredibly, the candiru can swim up into the human urethra or other orifices. Once inside, it uses sharp barbs to anchor itself, feeding on blood. Removal of this fish requires complex emergency surgery.
