#19: Professional Distance
It would be so weird to be a teacher. The way you behave and treat others at work matters in a way that it doesn’t for most other professions. If you’re a surgeon, it doesn’t really matter how you treat people as long as you can successfully do the surgery on them. If you work behind a computer, you can often get away with behaving however you want.
But teachers have to be careful. They don’t want to be accused of being too harsh to their students, but they also don’t want to be accused of being too friendly. And as this person points out, if you are too easygoing and informal with your students, they might take advantage of it and behave badly. It would be weird to have to watch yourself so closely all the time.
