#9: Joan Murray’s Parachute Failure
Fire ants are rarely welcome company, especially when someone is already badly injured. Their place in Joan Murray’s story, however, remains one of its most curious details. During a 1999 skydive over North Carolina, her main parachute entered an uncontrolled spin. She released it and opened the reserve, but the second canopy did not fully stabilize before she reached the ground. The impact caused extensive injuries, including numerous broken bones and serious internal damage.
