The pioneer of cereal, John Harvey Kellogg, had some extreme health beliefs. With a strong emphasis on intestinal health, he oversaw the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Trying to reduce his affluent patients’ “carnal desires,” Kellogg imposed stringent diets and required yogurt enemas.
